What Does FBA Packaging and Labeling Include?

Amazon FBA packaging and labeling requirements are designed to make products protected, identifiable, and scannable when they arrive at an Amazon fulfillment center. Depending on the product and shipment, sellers may need to apply product barcodes, package individual units securely, label shipping boxes, and follow product-specific preparation requirements.

FBA preparation can include:

  • Applying the correct barcode to each sellable unit

  • Bagging or protecting products when required

  • Marking products sold as sets

  • Applying FBA shipment labels to boxes

  • Applying pallet labels when required

  • Making sure barcodes remain visible and scannable

The requirements can differ depending on the product, packaging, and shipment.

What Barcode Does an FBA Product Need?

Amazon products can use different barcode options depending on the product and seller’s circumstances.

Manufacturer barcodes can include UPC, EAN, JAN, or ISBN. Amazon barcodes, such as FNSKU labels, may be required for products that cannot use an eligible manufacturer barcode. Certain products can have additional barcode requirements.

If an Amazon barcode is required, it needs to be applied to the correct product and remain accessible for scanning.

The barcode decision should be made before finalizing the packaging and labeling process.

Where Should FBA Product Labels Go?

Amazon recommends placing product barcode labels on a smooth, flat surface and avoiding corners, edges, and curved areas that can interfere with scanning. The barcode needs to remain readable after any required packaging or preparation is completed.

If another barcode on the product could be scanned accidentally, Amazon may require it to be covered or otherwise made unscannable.

This is especially important when products are placed inside bags, boxes, or protective packaging.

What Packaging Does Amazon Require?

Products need to arrive at Amazon’s fulfillment centers in packaging that protects them during handling and transportation.

Depending on the product, this may include:

  • A secure box

  • A sealed poly bag

  • Bubble wrap

  • Protective packaging

  • A retail package that already provides sufficient protection

Amazon’s current guidance identifies preparation requirements through its Send to Amazon workflow.

There is no single FBA packaging format that applies to every product.

What Products Need Poly Bags?

Some products require additional bagging. Amazon identifies certain powders, pellets, granular products, textiles, small products, liquids, and other products as potentially requiring poly-bag preparation.

The bag needs to be properly sealed, and certain bags require a suffocation warning depending on the size of the opening.

The product barcode also needs to remain visible and scannable on the outside of the completed package.

What About Fragile or Glass Products?

Fragile products, including some glass or ceramic products, may require additional protection such as bubble wrap.

The finished package needs to protect the product while still allowing the required barcode to be scanned. Amazon identifies bubble wrapping as a preparation method for certain fragile and sharp products.

🔧 Note from the Engineer:  Packaging equipment should be selected around the finished FBA package, not just the product. Adding a bag, protective wrap, or secondary package can change the package’s dimensions, labeling surface, handling characteristics, and downstream labeling requirements.

What Are the FBA Shipping Box Label Requirements?

The label on the individual product is different from the label required on the shipping carton.

Each box sent to an Amazon fulfillment center generally needs its own FBA Box ID label generated through the shipment workflow. Amazon recommends placing the label on a flat surface and avoiding seams, corners, or openings. It must remain uncovered and scannable.

Palletized shipments have additional requirements. Amazon’s current guidance calls for four pallet labels, with one placed near the top center of each side of the pallet.

What If Products Are Sold as a Set?

When multiple products are sold together as one unit, Amazon requires the items to be packaged together and clearly identified as a set.

Amazon gives examples such as “Sold as set” or similar wording indicating that the package should not be separated.

This helps prevent individual components from being treated as separate sellable units.

Does Amazon Apply the Labels for You?

For U.S. FBA shipments created from January 1, 2026 onward, Amazon no longer offers its previous FBA prep and item-labeling services. Sellers generally need to complete required preparation and labeling before inventory reaches the fulfillment center.

For businesses handling significant volume, this can make automated labeling more useful.

Depending on the application, equipment could include a conventional labeling machine for preprinted labels or a print-and-apply labeling system for automatically generating and applying variable labels.

What Equipment Can Be Used for FBA Packaging?

The equipment needed depends on the product and production volume.

A larger operation might use:

  • Labeling equipment for product labels or barcodes

  • Print-and-apply systems for variable FBA labels

  • Bagging equipment for products requiring poly bags

  • Sealing equipment for bags or flexible packaging

  • Coding equipment for variable information

  • Checkweighers for finished-package weight verification

  • Conveyors for moving products between operations

A smaller operation may perform some or all of these steps manually.

🔧 Note from the Engineer:  Do not automate an FBA packaging step simply because automation is available. First identify how many units you process, where errors occur, and which step consumes the most labor. If manual labeling is the bottleneck, automating labeling may provide more practical value than automating the entire packaging process.

What Should You Check Before Shipping to FBA?

Before sending inventory, verify:

  • Correct barcode type

  • Barcode readability

  • Product-specific preparation requirements

  • Required poly bags or protective packaging

  • Set identification, if applicable

  • FBA Box ID labels

  • Pallet labels, if applicable

  • Box dimensions and weight

  • Current instructions shown in Seller Central

Amazon’s requirements can change, and product-specific rules may apply. The Send to Amazon workflow should therefore be used as a final check before preparing a shipment.

The Bottom Line

Amazon FBA packaging and labeling is about making products protected, properly identified, and easy for Amazon to scan and process.

The exact requirements depend on the product, packaging, barcode type, and shipment. Individual products may need specific preparation and labels, while shipping cartons and pallets have separate labeling requirements.

For higher-volume sellers, the process can eventually include labeling, print-and-apply systems, bagging, sealing, coding, checkweighing, and conveying equipment.

Because Amazon requirements can change, always verify the current product-specific and shipment-specific instructions in Seller Central before finalizing an FBA packaging process.
